Acute Burn Care

| Institution: | phect-NEPAL |
| Project: | Despite high load of burn patients coming to our hospital every year, burn ICU and operating rooms lack medical equipment. This has severely compromised the quality of care that can be provided. These are the poor and destitute people who have no other option for the treatment of burn. Lion's Club International has agreed to provide us with a fund of 100,000 USD. However, we need to raise a matching amount of 35,000 USD.
The project aims to improve the standard of care of acute burns in Nepal. At present, any deep burn more than 40% TBSA have difficulty surviving while many other smaller burns also die with an overall hospital mortality of around 20% as per the Kirtipur Hospital data which has not changed over last seven years. As there are many reasons for this unacceptably high death rate, these can be largely prevented through multi-pronged approach. One of them is improving the quality of care in the hospital through equipping the facility with better equipment. This project is needed to improve the care of burn patients who have severe injuries through high quality ICU and surgical care. |

| Organization: | Public Health Concern Trust (phect)-NEPAL is a non governmental, nonpolitical, nonsecular, non religious and not for profit organization established in 1991 with the motto of “empowering people through health action”.
Phect-NEPAL played a major role in providing treatment to the injured people during the people's movement in 2062-63 BS. It operates two multispecialty hospitals, both are 100 bedded facilities. Kirtipur Hospital is a joint venture between phect-NEPAL and Kirtipur Municipality. Deparment of Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is the largest department in the hospital which takes care of wide spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgical through three units (Burn and General Plastic Unit has 6 plastic surgeons, Hand and Microsurgery Unit has 3 hand surgeons, and Maxillofacial Unit has 3 maxillofacial surgeons. This is the largest burn care facility in Nepal with maximum number of specialists, 32 beds (includes 6 ICU) and 2 operating room dedicated for burns. Burn ORs operate six days a week to cater to the need of high load of burn patients coming from allover the country. Since the start of burn care, the number of annual admissions has sky-rocketed every year. It has remained around 600 which is almost one percent of national annual burn incidence of 56,000. Most of the people come from out of Kathmandu (92%). Recent data shows that people come to us from 72 out of 77 districts and neighboring parts of India. It has also become a referral center for acute burns from reputed hospitals, both governmental and non-governmental, around Kathmandu as they lack ICU facility and adequate operating slots for burn patients. |
