| Project: | In 1999 The Rotary International and Nepal Cancer Relief Society established this new Bhaktapur Cancer Care Center, now renamed Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital (BCH), in collaboration with HMG Ministry of Health and the Bhaktapur Public and institutions. The Hospital charges Rs.5,000 for a complete course of radiotherapy treatment to each patient. Because of the extreme poverty amongst the people from the hills and the villages, we are very concerned for the fact that if these people were to contract cancer they would certainly succumb to the ultimate painful death because they were not able to pay for the treatment. This led to an effort to sponsor treatment for destitute cancer patients.
In September 2002 the Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital formed a Committee in Nepal under the Chairmanship of Rotarian Ganesh Bahadur Thapa, Founder President of The Rotary Club of Pasupati and ex-Governor of The State Bank of Nepal, to oversee the programme of free treatment. Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital Management Committee decided to initiate a project Cancer Upachar Dan with the aim to provide free treatment or subsidy of Rs.5,000 to 200 destitute cancer patients a year costing 10 Lakhs. This project has a target to raise Rs. 1 Crore including funds from The Rotary Club of Mansfield which would enable to treat 200 patients a year free of charges for 25 to 40 years depending upon the investment income between 5 to 10% a year. In order to raise this The Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital (BCH) Management Committee is undertaking the Cancer Upachar Dan fund rasing campaign. |
