Empowering Nepal: The mammography van for every woman’s health

Project: The incidence of breast cancer in Nepal is increasing, and Chitwan District in the Terai region has one of the highest rates of breast cancer. B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH), the largest comprehensive cancer center in the region, attends to most women with breast cancer. Although screening mammography is the most effective tool for the early diagnosis of breast cancer, there is a significant lack of access to screening mammography in this underprivileged area of Nepal.

With the successful implementation of the proposed project, a mobile mammography unit will be launched through the collaboration of the America Nepal Medical Foundation, the Ministry of Health, and B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital. Successfully implementing a mobile mammography van and addressing the need for breast cancer screening is the goal of this project.

Mobile mammogram will be retained and owned by the BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital (BPKMCH). The initial procurement of the mobile mammogram will be done by the America Nepal Medical Foundation Nepal (ANMF Nepal) with the resources collected by the America Nepal Medical Foundation USA (ANMF USA). There will be a duly established memorandum of understanding between ANMF Nepal and BPKMCH. The terms of memorandum will include ownership of the vehicle, maintenance of the vehicle not covered by the warranty. There was an executive meeting of ANMF USA and ANMF Nepal and BPKMCH stakeholder lead by Director Dr Shiva Paudel and Local Partner Surgeon Dr Ganga Sapkota (Date May 20,2025 ^ see attached Executive meeting draft).

The day-to-day operating cost and human resources will be provided by BPKMCH. This has been in principle agreed upon at the joint meeting (attached minutes).
Goals: -To increase participation and early detection of breast cancer
-To treat and follow up of the positive breast cancer screening patient at BPKMCH
-To collect the data and see the pattern of breast cancer which might be very unique to Nepal
We aim to make significant strides in improving breast cancer detection. Over the year, we will measure success through enhanced access to screenings, a reduction in advanced-stage breast cancer cases, and increased participation in mammography, which will serve as key indicators of our impact.
Need: There is a significant lack of access to screening mammography in this underprivileged area of Nepal. This project is needed to reach significant numbers of women in the community to participate in breast cancer screening for early diagnosis and subsequent treatment..

Description America Nepal Medical Foundation-Nepal (ANMF-Nepal) is an organization which consist of a group of reputed doctors and who volunteers in order to strengthen the health care delivery services of Nepal. The board members of ANMF-Nepal are working at different health care systems at National Level and they volunteer in this organization. The ANMF-Nepal implements the projects very efficiently with very less overhead cost. Mainly ANMFNepal donates the funds directly to other implementing partners (which are mainly government institutions).
