Please meet Dr. Jainendra Chaudhary, an accomplished GI surgeon from Bir Hospital. He has recently completed the ANMF supported training here in the US and has already been making a difference in the country.
Dr. Chaudhary completed MCh in surgical gastroenterology from NAMS Bir Hospital in 2016. He did an observership in advance laparoscopic colorectal surgery under Professor Alessandro Fichera, MD, FACS, FASCRS at University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, US. Dr. Chaudhary was able to learn a lot during his MCh training but still felt a need to learn advanced laparoscopic surgeries as his training was limited to laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Nepal.
Dr. Sushil R Pandey, a Colorectal surgeon in the US, CME committee chair and a board member of ANMF, saw an opportunity for capacity building in the field of laparoscopic surgery in Nepal and shared this idea of Observership with Professor Dr. Subodh K Adhikari from Nepal. As a government employed young surgeon from Bir Hospital (oldest tertiary center), selection of Dr. Jainendra Chaudhary for this training was very fitting.
During his time in the US, Dr. Chaudhary observed varieties of cases of right hemicolectomy, left hemicolectomy, low anterior resection and few cases of laparoscopic hernias. He was also able to gain insight on the outpatient clinic, ward round and critical physician-patient interactions. After returning from the US, he was able to perform right hemicolectomy for carcinoma right colon in three patients, laparoscopic mesh rectopexy for complete rectal prolapse in two patients and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in 12 cases. Initially, there were few cases of conversion from laparoscopic to open colectomy, but it has been improving gradually.
Dr. Chaudhary has also expressed his gratitude to Dr. Sushil Pandey, Prof. Dr. Subodh K Adhikari for taking the initiative, ANMF team for the grant, Dr. Prakash Thapaliya, Sindhu Koirala Thapaliya, Dr. Mahesh Dangal and Gita Bhattarai Dangal for their warm hospitality during his time in Seattle.
We are honored to be part of this endeavor. It is true to our core mission of promoting medical education and capacity building in Nepal. Please join ANMF in wishing Dr. Jainendra Chaudhary, the very best in his career. |
