Training young and adolescent girls (12-19-year-old) is crucial in Nepal’s context because they are not only the future mothers but because of the fact that 40% of these girls get married before they are 19 years old. To educate girls on the complications related to teenage pregnancy and also how to take care of themselves pre/post-delivery is crucial in this context. Targeting girls early in their teenage years and finding successful ways to improve their knowledge in child and maternal health, nutrition may help decrease rates of child and maternal mortality and improve service utilizations within the target population. Studies related to reasons for micronutrient deficiency in Nepal, claim that simple means like raising awareness in young girls, pregnant women and their spouses about the issues related to micro nutrient deficiency and educating on preventive methods can help tremendously in lowering the magnitude of the problem.
The aim of the project is to increase knowledge and capacity of young and adolescent girls on health-related issues that primarily affect them including mothers and children. Below are the specific objectives of the program:
- Prepare a pool of knowledgeable and capable young girls who will not only have the information to take care of themselves and their families but also inform the community members on crucial health topics relating to child and maternal health.
- Develop young and adolescence girls’ leadership skills to conduct health improvement initiatives at their community level.
- To increase utilization of health care services provided by the government by increasing the demand for it.
- Promote peer to peer learning through interactive, health education workshops by engaging school based child clubs.
