One day workshop "Perioperative Critical Events in Obstetrics". The workshop will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal in collaboration with University of Louisville, Society of Anesthesiologists of Nepal and Paropkar Maternity and Women's Hospital, Thapathali. This course aims to prepare health care professionals providing care to parturients for readiness in crisis in obstetric care during perioperative period. Experienced group of faculties from University of Louisville and major teaching medical institutes in Kathmandu, namely IOM, NAMS, KMC will deliver structured in- person lectures and simulations on obstetric emergencies. University of Louisville has organized similar workshop in Kentucky aiming at health care providers in labor and delivery unit. The workshop was highly effective in providing focused lectures on obstetric emergency, updating the participants in the latest protocols, and providing hands on training using simulation of obstetric emergency. The workshop was very well received by the participants and not only it was able to cover most obstetric emergency situations and latest guidelines, but it also focused on importance of communication between health care providers. We are planning to organize a workshop using similar topics but also modifying it to suit the local organizational structure and resources in Kathmandu, Nepal. What are the goals of the project? The workshop is prepared with health care providers involved in perioperative care of parturient, mainly including anesthesiologist, anesthesia residents, maternal fetal medicine specialists, obstetricians, Ob/gyn residents, General Practitioners, and medical students. We are planning to include 50-60 participants in the workshop. Why is the project needed? The lectures will use American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and Society off obstetric anesthesia and perinatology(SOAP) guidelines as reference. Topics are:
The simulations will be done utilizing human simulators. The simulations will be based on Society of obstetric anesthesia and perinatology recommended drills and will utilize Stanford obstetric anesthesia emergency manual as primary resource. The simulations topics are as follows.
