The transition to motherhood is marked by hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and adjustments to a new role, potentially impacting a woman’s mental well-being and leading to postpartum (first six to eight weeks after delivery) mental health problems. Postpartum mental disorders are broadly classified into two types: postpartum common mental disorders (PCMDs) and postpartum severe mental disorders (PSMDs). PCMDs constitute non-psychotic mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, somatoform, and adjustment disorders. PSMDs encompass schizophrenia, affective psychosis, and psychotic and nonpsychotic forms of bipolar disorders. Peripartum mental illness is largely under-diagnosed and can have far-reaching adverse consequences for both the mother and the infant, casting a shadow over what is meant to be a joyous time.3 Women experiencing gender-based violence (GBV), having a family history of mental illness, childbirth by obstetric trauma, those living in poverty, or with a lack of social support are most vulnerable to peripartum mental health problems.2 Though postpartum depression has received considerable attention in recent years, other common postpartum mental disorders seem to be less discussed. This study aims to fill this gap, helping to address the psychiatric problems of mothers in a timely manner before they take a toll on maternal and child health and have grave consequences for the future. |
