Project: Nephrology service started at Bir Hospital in Nepal. Though over 40 kidney biopsies are done every year, due to lack of well trained manpower in the field of renal histopathology glomerular diseases can not be easily diagnosed with accuracy. Again, IgA nephropathy also remains undiagnosed. Hence, training a renal histopathologist and a histopathology technician is found to be the most important task for the hospital in order to provide accurate service to the patients.

1/27/03  A candidate (Dr. Ashok Joshi) has been identified by Bir Hospital for renal training at Vanderbilt University, School of Medicine as a visiting scholar beginning March 2003.
6/9/03  Dr. Joshi sent to Vanderbilt University, Tennessee for training. Dr. Joshi is undergoing a training in renal pathology and getting exposed to renal biopsy specimens both native biopsies and transplant renal biopsies. He is also getting exposed to the various stains used for staining slides like Jones silver, PAS and H/E. He is also gaining experience in the use of electron microscopy of renal biopsy specimens and also gaining experience in immunoflouresence microscopy so that with all these a proper diagnosis of renal biopsy specimen can be made.
