Nepal Critical Care Development Foundation (NCCDF) proposes to create Nepal's first Medical Simulation (SimMed) Center. Simulation is a well-recognized and increasingly commonplace educational tool for healthcare professionals. Simulation is educationally effective and it improves performance of technical and non-technical skills. It is also useful for practicing a team response to low frequency, high-risk clinical events. Advances in technology have led to a wide diversity of training methods, utilizing equipment ranging from low-fidelity models for skills practice to the high-fidelity manikins used in simulation centers for scenario-based learning.
NCCDF is requesting funds for equipment and first year staff salary to establish and run the first year of the project. This would be one-time funding and there will be no ongoing funding request from NCCDF. NCCDF is currently running BASIC for Nurses and Infection Prevention & Control training and they are planning to run American Heart Association's BLS and ACLS (CPR) training at the Sim Med center, which will generate some revenue.
The SimMed Center will be first of its kind, state-of-art centre providing medical education and offering in-situation scenario training to healthcare professionals. Simulation tools serve as an alternative to the real patient. Trainers can make mistakes and learn from them without the fear of distressing the patient. The practice of a scenario can be videotaped for immediate feedback to participants during the debriefing sessions.
The proposed simulation center would be able to conduct training sessions that can cover general clinical scenarios or specific scenario targeted to address recent critical incident or problems unique to the hospital. The center will help develop non-technical skills or human factors such as situational awareness, decision making, task management, team working, communication skills and calmness under pressure too. |
