| Need: | Snake Bite, a global public health problem that primarily affects poor agrarian and pastoralist communities of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania, is largely neglected despite being so common. According to estimates, more than 5 million people in the world suffer snakebite every year. Of those who are bitten, approximately 125 000 die and around 400 000 are left with permanent sequelae. (Koirala et. al., 2013). However, more recent community-based surveys in South East Asian Countries have shown that the scale of this problem is far greater than suggested by hospital-based statistics, and that these global figures greatly underestimate the actual incidence of snakebite envenoming and the resulting mortality and disability.
Nepal is estimated to have 12,000 snake bites cases annually out of which 200 result in mortalities (Sharma et.al. 2004). It is predominantly a problem of rural and peri-urban areas. Marginalized population in Terai region of Nepal is more prone to this neglected problem in comparison to other parts. An important factor that contributes to the morbidity and mortality associated with snakebites, particularly in this region of Nepal, is the poor availability of the validated treatment for this disease: anti-venoms. Anti-venoms are immune globulins, or immunoglobulin fragments, purified from the serum or plasma of hyper immunized animal with snake venom. It has a significant impact on human health by preventing severe damages caused by snakebite. It also benefits the economy through treatment related expenditure and increase of productivity. Most of the fatalities in snake-bite cases are caused because of the victim not reaching the hospital on time to receive care. However, these cases are preventable. The community is not well-informed about the occupational risks and simple measures that can prevent a bite. People continue to use harmful practices such as tourniquets, cauterization, cutting & suction, herbal remedies, quackery etc. It is necessary to address this serious but neglected issue of snake-bite and introduce safety measures to prevent mortalities. In rural areas where snakebite is mostly prevalent, traditional faith healers, snake charmers and religious man (Dhami) treat many snakebite victims. In rural population of Nepal, the doctor population ratio is far from accepted norms and most of the trained health work forces are based in urban areas. Therefore, the people of rural areas often seek health care from practitioners of indigenous medicine. Most of the death related to snakebite occurs before reaching the treatment center either during transportation or at the village. Thus, the project seeks to create public awareness on first aid and to reach on time and support necessary equipment's to the treatment center to provide effective and reliable services of snake bite victims. |
