Regular telemedicine multidisciplinary meetings between doctors in LMIC and developed countries and training seminars for residents in National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) are a feasible and effective method for improving management for patients and training for residents in NAMS.

Aim

To establish and test the feasibility and effectiveness of regular telemedicine between NAMS and other institutes to improve management of patients at Bir Hospital and enhance training for residents in Nepal.

Objectives

  1. Establish weekly multidisciplinary telemedicine meetings,
  2. Establish weekly seminars for residents at the National Academy of Medical Sciences,
  3. Support regularly doctors working in different parts of Nepal by faculties of NAMS, and
  4. Support NAMS faculties and residents in different academic activities by international faculties.

Intervention

Didactic lectures for DM residents will be conducted. Topics of lectures will be decided by training program director in Nepal.

Patients from Bir hospital will be discussed. Local privacy, rules, confidentiality will be followed. If required, an encrypted transmission is possible.

16 Aug 19  ANMF/Nepal reports: This project has been continuing what it had been intended to do that is with presentation, classes, connection between hospitals as it was shown on our recent documentary presented by Dr.Subhash in the ANMF-US conference. It almost has been 1 year that the Telemedicine has been handed over to Bir Hospital so now Sastra Network the Vendor has to be paid the final installment.

21 Jun 18  Report from Sastra Network Solution Inc.:  As per the demo provided by SASTRA team, it has been concluded that the setup has been successfully installed and operated with the concerned members of BIR HOSPITAL.The demo was provided multiple times to clear out confusions regarding the setup of the devices.

To clear out the confusions regarding the installation and setup of SCOPIA XT Desktop, we all along with Dr. Sangeeta Basnet communicated with Dr. Puja Amatya , where she herself communicated with BIR Hospitals's Video conferencing device via her laptop. I have attached the screenshot above as well.

Moreover, a final demo session was also successfully accomplished with Mr. Santosh Sapkota along with the CEO of Sastra Network Solution Inc, Mr. Kishor Panth and followings were discussed as well:

  1. Sastra Network Solution Inc will provide support for the Video conferencing session to Bir Hospital.
  2. Bir Hospital must pre-inform (24 hours early) Sastra Network Solution if any session is going to be held.
  3. All handovers and functionality of the Video Conferencing device and Scopia XT desktop will be provided to the technical staff of Bir Hospital.
  4. Bandwidth for the functionality of the system for video conference should be managed accordingly.

All the screenshots with Dr. Puja Amatya and Mr. Santosh Sapkota has been attached in this mail. Along with the attachments, the setup guidelines has also been attached.

20 Jun 18  A demonstartion of the teleconferencing equipment was provided by the vendor Sastra Network Solution Inc. Pvt. Ltd. It was concluded by the concerned members of Bir Hospital that the setup has been successfully installed and operated. Inauguration of the system is scheduled for 24 June 2018.
1 May 18  Update from ANMF/Nepal: Funds are yet to be disbursed. ANMF/Nepal has received a fund approval letter from the Social Welfare Council. Funds will be disbursed after the system/software is tested properly. The date is yet to be scheduled for the assessment.
6 Apr 18  Social Welfare Council approval for the telemedicine/teleconference equipment setup at Bir Hospital received by ANMF/Nepal. The software and the setup are yet to be tested by ANMF. Funds will be disbursed after the system/software are tested properly.
3 Mar 18 Report received from ANMF/USA President's visit to Chautara Hospital.
28 Feb 18 ANMF/Nepal and ANMF/USA members visited the NAMS/Bir Hospital teleconference site and met with the hospital's director, NAMS dean, hospital's IT expert, etc, and via teleconferencing, talked with telemedicine set up team who were at their office. The set up is excellent, with minor glitches caused by a slow broadband at the hospital. But the quality was otherwise good. We plan to have a teleconference trial run between a couple of US sites and Bir Hospital in near future. After the trial session, they would like to set up regularly scheduled teleconference exchanges between NAMS/Bir and experts in the US.
