The proposed scholarship for visiting fellowship for initiation of Lung Transplant program in Nepal will cover the travel and living cost of Dr Ranjan Sapkota during a period not exceeding 3 months. The expected cost estimated (and hence the fund requested) is USD 9750 of which the host institution will bear USD 1192. The scholarship will be instrumental in starting the most important first step toward realizing the mission of starting a sustainable lung transplant program in the country. |
| Goals: |
- Refreshing my knowledge about lung transplantation: indications, the conduct, and the management of complications.
- Getting exposed to the details of the surgical techniques required for the donor and recipient surgeries.
- Learning the nuances of organizing and managing a lung transplant program in totality: from selection to follow-up.

| Need: |
After more than 3 decades of organized Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Services, and after more than a decade of solid organ transplants, Nepal still lacks a Heart and Lung Transplant Program. There have been multiple reports of the growing numbers of cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, and deaths due to both, in the country, over the years. A number of patients with end-stage heart and lung diseases succumb silently in hospitals and communities. Only a handful of “lucky” ones have had access to transplant surgery in neighboring India. Establishing a sustainable program in the country will depend on the availability of human resources and appropriate infrastructure: this project is to kickstart the building of the former. |

America Nepal Medical Foundation-Nepal (ANMF-Nepal) is an organization which consist of a group of reputed doctors and who volunteers in order to strengthen the health care delivery services of Nepal. The board members of ANMF-Nepal are working at different health care systems at National Level and they volunteer in this organization. The ANMF-Nepal implements the projects very efficiently with very less overhead cost. Mainly ANMFNepal donates the funds directly to other implementing partners (which are mainly government institutions). |
